A Geographic Information System (GIS) is any system that captures, stores, analyses, manages and presents data that are linked to location.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are software that have the ability to link mapping (data) with databases to enable querying of data spatially. This is very useful for organisations to visually see the relationship between any data and location. In other words, most information with a location aspect held in a database or spreadsheet is difficult to analyse or interpret but when a Geographic Information System is used, data analysis and interpretation is made easy.

Geographic Information Systems are also used to create and display maps which can be shared in various forms such as PDFs as well viewed using Google Earth.
